Are aluminum bikes the lightest material they can be?

No. Aluminium does not necessarily make the strongest and lightest bike frame. The top of the range bikes today are molded from carbon fibre.

Aluminum bikes are more of a harsh ride, however titanium bikes are softer and easier to ride. Steel bikes go soft with age but have a nicer ride quality. They're all different and better for various reasons, aluminum is not the lightest titanium is.

Aluminum was once the lightest weight material used for bike construction. Currently though carbon fiber is the lightest weight material currently used. It has a better weight to strength ratio but does have it's drawback. It can be brittle in some application and costs more to use. Titanium is also stronger and lighter than aluminum.
