University's have a database of loans which everyone can apply for reguardless of status. An assessment form should be completed in order to ensure all possible loans are available.

Student loans are available to a wide range of people despite there economic status. Many loans are not based on credit status, but on income level.

Subsidized student loans are based on need and nothing else. Credit worthiness is not an issue; there is no credit check. Being a single mother is neither here no there except with regard to your dependent, which you will include on the FAFSA.

Yes, there are actually programs where you can get paid instead of taking out a loan. Check with the college to see if they have a work program.

At the risk of sounding harsh, why are you considering going into debt when you still owe others money? Pay off what you owe; THEN think about borrowing more. I'm pretty sure that Student loans must be repaid--even if you take a bankruptcy So think twice before taking one out.

The first step in obtaining a student loan is to fill out a FAFSA. Unless you are trying to get a personal student loan through your own lending institution, your credit should not matter. Since you are a single mother, you may be eligible for additional financial aid including but not limited to loans. These are based on need.
