You won't be arrested, but you likely will be sued. Prepare a detailed letter about why you are stopping payment (or stopping a check)and send it to the provider.
You may be subject to criminal penalties, and possibly arrest if you stop payment, while intending as a result, to defraud the service giver of just compensation.
