Star Office is a suite developed by Sun Microsystems that includes word processing, database, presentation, drawing, and spreadsheet programs. It's designed to be completely compatible with Microsoft Office. The legal document was no doubt created using Star Office's word processing program, Writer. There should be no problem opening it in Microsoft Word.

If the file was saved as a word document (. doc) format it will be fine, if it was saved in star office's default format then it may not open. To save as. doc choose save as, then in the drop down box under the name choose Microsoft Word

In my experience Microsoft Word will only open files with the microsoft word extension at the end of the filename. However there are other ways to open it. For example there are many online converters that can convert it to microsoft word format. No, opening the file in microsoft word will not corrupt the file.

Opening it on Microsoft won't corrupt the file, unless you save it. What program was it originally in? I would recommend using that same original program if it is accessible. Adobe ir its been scanned in, MS Word/Works/Perfect if it is already in Microsoft. Of course you can simply open the attachment and see what program it displays properly.

One way is to download the document twice and only try one file with Word (rename the other). Also, you could download Open Office free and that might work (openoffice. org).
