Can I use a 2.5 ton condenser with a 3 ton air handler? If so, what are the downsides?

If you really wanna stick to rules and science strictly its better if both your air handler and your condensor are 2. 5 tons. However I have seen homes where a half ton difference has been present and everything is fine - even their installers said it wouldn't be a problem.

sleepyjey - I think you specifically mean half a ton difference as when the air handler has a higher ton rating. The other way around (condensor being half a ton higher) will mess up your compressor easily!  add a comment

If you're condensor and air handler are not matched will it affect your warranty and other stuff related to replacement? You better check with a tech expert about whether it is safe and legal to do so. In case of an accident you'll end up really complicated!
