Sterling silver rings which have no surface treatment can be sized. Oxides and applied oxidation can be replaced when after polishing. However, specialty coatings may be used to retard tarnishing on silver. E-coating, and Rhodium plating are two examples of factory applied anti-tarnish that would need to be removed before sizing. The coatings should be reapplied when sizing is finished.

Just like gold, sterling silver can be heated and stretched into a different shape. A sterling silver ring can be sized just like a gold one can, and the results are the same.

Any ring can be sized. Obviously, softer metal can be sized more easily, but if the ring is valuable to you, take it to a jeweler. There they can make the ring any size by either adding or taking away metal.
