The Weight Watchers point system gives every food a point. This point is based on calories, fiber and fat content. Dieters keep track of their daily points and are only 'allowed' a certain amount of points per day. There is a book that tells you the points of each food.

Weight Watchers has a formula (that they do not disclose to you) to calculate point values for the foods you eat. You take a small test that asks about your size and gender and daily activities and such that determines the amount of points you're allowed to eat daily. It's a GREAT system. I lost 30 pounds in 3-4 months.

Weight-Watchers "Momentum" program; for-example U.S. patent 6,878,885: Food "POINTS" formula-calculation is based on calories, grams fat, & grams fiber; p = calories/(50, or 70) + (fat_grams/12) - min(fiber_grams,4)/5 Based on your weight-loss goals & progress, you have a daily or weekly "POINTS" budget. You "earn" Activity-Points; PA = activity_weighting( 0.05=low-intensity, 0.07=moderate-intensity; 0.18 to 0.20=high-intensity) x Kilograms_body_weight x activity_minutes / 100

You are given an allotted number of points per day based on various individual factors such as current weight, age, etc. Each food is assigned a point value based on its nutritional profile. Then you track your food and points each day to make sure you stay under the limit.

Food items are assigned a point value, based on nutritional value. As a participant, you're allowed so many points per day to maintain or lose weight.

When you first start the Weight Watchers program, you will be allowed so many points a day, and as you lose weight you take points away. It is very gradual.
