Some types of dolphins do live in freshwater but most species of dolphins and the largest numbers of dolphins live in the earth's oceans. Dolphins are similar to humans in that they have adapted to live in a wide range of habitats including both the oceans, rivers, and lakes.

Some species of dolphins live in freshwater all the time, and ocean going dolphins will often go into the plumes of fresh to brackish water at the mouths of rivers and streams looking for whatever it is dolphins want -- shelter, food, boredom relief, or in persuit of a mate or to protect their calves.
