I never gave mine hay but they love fruits and vegetable, grass, and hamster/guinea pig food they sell in pet stores. You can also put in sugar and salt licks (they look like hard pills) for them to chew on and file down their teeth. Make sure they always have fresh water too.

Grass hay (timothy/orchard for adults, alfalfa for babies up to 6 months and pregnant pigs) is the staple of a cavy's diet: give unlimitedly. Also 1/8 cup of pellets (timothy - adults and alfalfa - babies/pregnant) and 1/2 cup veg (leaf lettuce, bell peppers, parsley, cucumber, tomatoes, carrot) daily.

That's a sure bet. They love hay. But some things they love even more, especially fresh produce, and many have distinct preferences. In general, they eat anything that other rodents eat, like grass, dandelion, clover, fruit, vegetables, nuts, grains. Add to that an occasional dry bread crust for dental care.
