Usually, thieves look for places that are the easiest to enter. So a home with security bars will be at least somewhat less attractive to thieves than a home without the bars. Unless a thief has a very personal grudge against you, they will not attempt to enter your home if there are easier targets available.

Of course they work. They don't work as good as they used to when they were new but that is because there are more of them. They are pretty good at what they do though. They are also used to keep inventory. That is another way to keep track of things.
