Veterinarians can continue their education in specialty area, like equine medicine or exotics. There are programs and opportunities made available to interested graduates who want to focus the practice in a particular area. These programs can be internships, fellowships, extended residency and other options, depending on the field of study and who/what is offering the program.

If you do want to specialize in something you do need to do a residency. If you do want to focus on a specific area, there are several programs, depending on the area to specialize yourself in.

It completely depends on the veterinary school attended. Many of the top vet schools do require a residency (much as doctors are required to do) so that vets can gain additional skills in a specific area of practices. This is not required for certification, however, so many schools, including excellent ones, do not require such training.

You generally will complete a residency program but this depends upon your school. Most vets gain experience at an ordinary vet office first then move on toward a specialty.

General veterinarians do not do a residency, but people who want to specialize within the field do. A specialty can allow a person to work in veterinary school teaching other veterinarians. There are many special fields from which to choose that are based on things common to all animals but which require expertise--such as radiology and pathology.
