They both make decent laptops. I would advise you to go with the company that offers you the best deal, and get the extended warranty if paying more than $1000.

Both make nice laptops. When comparing laptops, make sure that you are comparing laptops with similar specs. The Sony laptops tend to be priced a bit higher then other similar computers, but you can find good deals on them. Sony laptops tend to have a bit more style than the HP's, but this is a personal choice.

On the mid to high end (900+) yes, below that no. Most manufacturer's products under $1000 have "cheaper" parts. For the best hardware, get an apple or lenovo. I'd take their used good equipment over bargain equipment any day.

Generally yes. Sony usually makes fairly good hardware, the problem is their software isn't very good. In this case the drivers for the computer may be hard to find.

HP laptops will typically be cheaper than Sony laptops. Sony laptops, though pricier, will perform better and have a better warranty and tech support service. HP has had several problems in the past with motherboard failures as well.

HP makes more laptops per year which makes upkeep and repairs easier and less obvious. Sony usually has higher quality components than HP. I have heard the the customer service at Sony isn't that good. Usually the laptop you chose has a lot more to do with price and features than brand. so good luck.
