Croup is caused by an inflammation of the vocal cords caused by a viral infection. Steroids are an anti-inflammatory and thus treat the symptoms of the viral infection, though not necessarily the infection itself. These aren't anabolic steroids, the kind you associate with sports cheating, but rather are in the same class that are included in asthma or arthritis medications.

Some physicians will use oral prednisone to treat moderate cases of croup that do not respond to home treatments. Steroids reduce the inflamation and swelling of the airways.

It is not always necessary to treat croup with a liquid steroid. Place the child in a room with a steam inhaler and vaporize the room. If there is fever it should be taken care of. Only when there is severe breathing problem,liquid steroid be used.

Yes, an appropriate treatment for croup is liquid steroid and breathing treatment done with racemic epinephrine which will decrease the swelling in the throat.
