Chow-Chows can make very good pets. They tend to be very territorial and protective so they require good obedience training and may not be great around small children.

I have personally known that chows are loyal but they do have the tendency to want to bite strangers. They are a good watch dog.

A great pet-owner can have a great pet regardless of breed. With a Chow-Chow, it is very important to socialize, and train them early. Chows should be exposed to as many different people and situations as they can be, to avoid them becoming territorial of their owner. Would not be a good choice for first-time dog owner.

Chows make an exceptional house pet. They have that blue black tongue, are quite good with children, but not so good with other pets unless they have been raised with them.

The color of a chow chow makes no difference in its temperament. Heredity, socialization and obedience training will make any chow chow a good pet. Try to meet the puppy's parents before buying the dog. Also, never pick a cowering puppy or an aggressive puppy if you will be choosing from a litter.

I don't think any of the chows make good pets, they are known to turn or "flip out" all of sudden and can attack.
