Most of the time birth control works. There are always exceptions and there are things that may interfere with how well they work such as antibiotics impacting use of pill type contraception. You can never count on it being 100%. Sex while using any prevention method means pregnancy is possible.

Most birth controls claim to be "99.9%" effective. The truth is that you can still get pregnant. It is however, better to have it than to not have it.

The exact rates of success vary with the form of birth control used, but most forms of birth control are both safe and extremely effective.
