You will need to have at least two, and preferably four, inches on each side of the TV for a comfortable fit to have access to the back for cables.

It depends on how much space you want, and the specific model of the television. Remember that the 52" screen is 52" diagonally. You will want enough room to fit the outer bevel of the tv into the entertainment center, and some room to fit it in. A premade stand might be able to give you some ideas.
