How big of a bag can you carry on to an airplane for free?

These charges are getting out of hand.

A carry-on bag must be less than 45 linear inches and less than 40 pounds. This means that when you measure up all of the sides (length, width, height), it must be less than 45 inches. But remember, you cannot bring any large amounts of liquid on the plane with you, so that would need to be checked.

I never check a bag. I stuff all of my clothes into a laptop bag, and carry a big purse. I think you can go bigger, such as a small roller luggage, but its a pain to find overhead space. I take things that can fit under my seat.
