There are a lot of online sites, many maintained by agricultural and horticultural enterprises, that can help with berry identification. There are also field books that can be helpful.

A good place to start learning about berry bushes and other edible plants is in books and web sites on herbal and natural remedies and herbology. Books on botany and "Plants of the Pacific Northwest" (or whatever area you may be interested in) are also very useful.

Go to your local library and check out as many books as you can about the subject and read them. The only way to learn is to study.

I would go get some books on identifying plants. Take the book around with you when you are outside and see what type of berries each tree or bush has on them. with a little practice and dedication you will be able to tell what they are. This is the best way that I can think of.

Make your own flash cards. Print pictures of the various things you are wanting to learn. On one side of the note card, glue down the picture. Then study the picture and make mental notes. Try to correlate something about the leaf to the name of the plant. On the other side of the card write what it is.

Look at lots of resources! Buy some books or get some from the library to read and look at pictures. Take some books on hikes with you and when you come across a berry tree or bush, look it up.

Go to the library and find tree and bush identification books. You will want to look at the trees and shrubs during several seasons, you may need to see the flowers to start identifying and definitely the fruits or berries. Eat nothing until you are absolutely positive about identification.

Tree identification uses the shape of the tree, arrangement of its leaves, and the texture, color and veins of the leaves. You can identify a berry tree even without berries.
