A very cool technique is to beat the wood with a big linked chain, putting interesting distressed markings in the wood. When adding stain or varnish to it the effect is quite unique.

One way to update knotty pine without paint would be to stain the wood. First, sand the wood using a fine grit sand paper. Make sure the wood is clean and smooth before applying a stain. You may need to apply more than one coat of stain. Once the wood has been stained you can add polyurithane to finish.

You can simply sand it down to its natural appearence. purchase a cheap orbital palm sander and get to work. Be careful, never allow the sander to stay in one spot or you will create dips in the wood. stain can be applied via rag instead of painting.

Use sandpaper to remove whatever you have on it now. Then apply a light natural looking stain. This will give it that update you desire

The easiest way to do this is to use a sander with 80 grit sand paper to lightly sand the finish off of the pine. Next, use 120 or 140 grit sand paper and smooth it out. After the wood is smooth, Use a clear-coat to seal the wood.
