Some local governments have instituted an interesting program: They've identified girls at risk of teen pregnancy. The program offers the girls one dollar for every day that they don't become pregnant. The $365 per girl costs far less than the alternative. Perhaps this same strategy could work for those middle school students identified as at-risk of dropping out.

One of the best ways is to encourage the students' parents to become involved in an effort to create a community though the school. By emphasizing that friends, family and the community are interested in the students' achievements, students will be more motivated to remain in school.

Keeping students in school is always a challenge. Alternative education programs definately help. If students can learn experientially while learning life skills, such as mechanics, this tends to help tremendously.

Be aware of the human needs of the students. Help them see school as a safe haven. Provide food for the students in low-income areas; many go home to no dinners. Provide a place to get homework help and tutoring after school. Offer early vocational training.
