Watch your friends in good times and bad. Does his character change? His attitude when he is under pressure or in pain will show you his true character.

I would recommend looking at his/her repeated behaviors. It can be easy to look strong by doing a few good things, or bad for messing up a few times, but if throughout their life they have shown strong character and a desire to improve that's a good sign!

Observe how they treat others in general. Do they live the Golden Rule? Are their bills paid? Are they kind? Do they do the right thing even when they aren't getting the credit? How do they treat their parents and animals? Are they good for their word? All are clues.

Character is determined by actions that are honest, thoughtful, respectful, helpful, and caring of others, especially when a sacrifice is required. Does your friend support others and tell the truth even when it is difficult to do so, or does your friend belittle others and take liberty with the truth when it seems to benefit them?

You can determine your friend's character by what they do when they think they won't get caught. Do they cheat, steal, or lie when they can get away with it?

True character can be detected by non swayable convictions that one lives by. If these characteristics stay within guidelines of loving oneself and treating one'self well to be happy, but not at the expense of others' pain, there is nothing wrong with such.
