addiction

How can you stop being an enabler to a drug addict?

My son has been addicted to drugs for about 2 years, and I hate seeing him in pain, but I hate his lifestyle and I know I am only fueling the addiction.

Addiction is a family disease; everyone in the family needs help, not just the addict. Go to AlAnon meetings (addiction is addiction; it doesn't matter if it's alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, etc. ) and you can learn how to better care for yourself, and subsequently your loved ones.

Stop giving him money! You know all he is going to do is spend it on drugs. Try to talk to him and get him into rehab. If he won't go you should just say "I love you and I want to be a part of your life but I can no longer support your addiction. "

Well first off stop allowing him to get them, and make sure there is no in home access. You should both see a person that can help you with this.

You have to be strong, and picture what your money or help is actually buying. Imagine him at his worst, and it will give you the strength to not help.

Eventually you are going to cut him off completely. Refuse to give him any money, as he will just spend it on his addiction. In addition if he doesn't seek help, as sad and hard as this is, you might have to cut him out of your life completely for both your sakes.

There is no easy way. Stop giving them money, stop giving them a place to dry out, stop trusting them with anything in the household that could be sold. Get them into rehab if you can. Good luck.
