Money evolved from bartering systems in which goods and services were exchanged. Cattle, sheep and camels were exchanged until about 6,000 B. C. and were replaced with cowrie shells. Metals like copper and bronze were melted into the form of the cowrie shells in around 1,000 B. C. , which evolved into coins.

At first people gave goods in return. Before coins animal skins were used as payment of goods, property or even people. When that became problematic, coins were invented.
