Prohibition grew out of the temperence movement which was started mostly by women. They felt that prohibiting alcohol would solve the problems of fathers who abandoned their families.
Unfortunately, prohibition rose out of the women's movement. Domestic violence was more of a problem back then, and some thought that banning alcohol would fix that.
