The interactionist theory developed as a theory of sociology from American philosophy. The theory is that a persons perspective changes with every interaction he has with people. People interract through symbols, or they manipulate symbols in order to build culture. Blumer developed this theory and gave it its name in 1937.

It is a theory that developed based on the work of James Parker. It is not exactly an offshoot of sociology because it is one of the primary schools of sociological thought in the world today.
