The cow first needs to give birth before milk can be made. Just like people, breast milk from a cow is regulated by hormones. The cow eats and digests food. As the food moves into her small intestine, the nutrients are absorbed into her bloodstream. The nutrients are carried to her udder and are transformed into milk.

In order for a cow to produce milk it must first get pregnant and give birth to a baby calf. Then the food that it eats is digested. Some nutrients from that food go into becoming the milk.
