Female dogs usually urinate to mark territory. Girls aren't as territorial as boys, and usually use urine to "advertise" that they are in the area and ready to mate. Also, rubbing on objects. Generally a female knows her territory and will just bark to scare off unwanted visitors if they come too close.

A female dog will mark her territory with a urine trail which is a bit unlike the male dog's territorial mannerisms. Female dogs do not as frequently urinate as males to mark their spaces and they tend to keep it closer to home than the males. Female dog territories are read by the males.

Like the male dog, female dogs do urine marking by leg lifting. The difference is the quantities of testosterone which the female produce and excrete an acid called parahydroxybenzoic (PHBA) which is care of status and receptivity to mating. The signaling depends on the heat cycle. Most female do not lift leg, but urinating marks there area and sexual receptivity.

Female dogs mark their territory to show their dominance and to tell other dogs that the thing they are peeing on is "theirs". Wolves are extremely territorial to other packs, and since dogs are descended from wolves, they've inherited that behavior.
