"How" depends on "why. " If you cannot attend the wedding (work, health, lack of funds... ), you need only explain and express your disappointment to the bride. Do so asap! If, however, you simply don't want to serve (don't like the groom, too busy with your own life... ), you must apologize IMMEDIATELY for accepting an honor you didn't deserve.

The best thing to do is talk directly to the bride. Explain why you don't feel you're suited for the job or why you're not comfortable doing it.

You need to be honest and tell the bride as soon as you can. Tell her your reasons for backing out. Just be honest, most people respect honesty more than they respect you making up lies to avoid hurting their feelings. Tell her you're very sorry that you had to back out.

Once you've accepted the responsibility to be the maid of honor, remember the key word "honor" is at stake and you should have a very good reason for deciding to reverse your decision on the bride. Carefully approach the subject for discussion with the bride, weighing both the pros and cons before finalizing your withdrawal.
