Bagworms look like small pinecones; they winter in the sack that was put there by the female. They hatch during May and June, eating the plant for a couple of months. Although birds do eat the worms this will not control the problem alone. In May, when they hatch, a good insecticide will take care of this problem.

To get rid of worms in pine trees, you must first pull out all the brown needles. This gets most of the caterpillars out. After that, you can spray the affected bud areas of the tree with soapy water. They shouold not kill your tree though.
