Old Toyota 4 Runner's are known for this. It sounds like your thermostat is out of whack and needs to be replaced. The problems will become more frequent until you bite the bullet and fix the problem.

Most often, when your Toyota 4 Runner is overheating, but not all the time, your thermostat is going bad. Failure to replace will cause increased overheating and head gasket troubles.

Check the radiator coolant level. Check the radiator for excess dust and dirt, or anything that can impede air flow. With the 4 Runner in neutral, rev the engine. If you hear a squealing noise, the belt is slipping. The nest probable cause would be the thermostat.
