Prolonged high nitrates will shorten the lifespan of a goldfish. Keep nitrates below 40 ppm. Check the water quality once every week using a water quality test kit. Change out 30% of the water once every week. Always use a liquid dechlorinating product before adding water into the goldfish tank.

High levels of nitrate cause nitrate poisoning and can lead to ammonia poisoning. Both of these are lethal to fish. Nitrate levels also affect the overall health and stress levels of the fish. If the fish become ill they will not eat and will starve to death. Low levels of nitrates will be abosorbed by live plants.

Nitrates are toxic to all adolescence fish and not only stunt their growth but can also kill them. High nitrate levels can also effect the oxygen levels. Higher nitrates means lower oxygen levels. Also the nitrate levels have an effect on algae growth in aquariums. The algae feed on the nitrates and can grow uncontrollably.
