During mating, the male penguins mounts the female while she remains still to prevent him from falling. When the press their cloacas together, sperm is passed through fertilizing the egg. The eggs are coated forming the shell and then laid.

Penguins have a very long mating period and a mating ritual that is far more complex than other animals similar to them evolutionarily.
