A space saver bag is a plastic bag with a special outlet where a vacuum hose connects. The vacuum is than placed on the hole where it sucks out all the excess air from the bag allowing the bag and it's contents to shrink considerable in size do to the fact that the excess air is gone.

A lot of space, when packing your clothes, is actually taken up by air inside them and the bag. When using a "space bag" you just let all the air out, and seal it back hermetically.

Well they are very similar in construction to a ziploc sandwich bag. However the have a special valve. This lets air be pulled out of the bag with a vacuum.

After filling the bag with the desired items and closing the top, you attach the hose of your vacuum cleaner to the special valve on the bag. You then suck the air out of the bag thereby "shrinking" it. The idea is that by removing the air, you compress the items and make them smaller and easier to store.
