If the majority of the tooth is missing, it will most likely have a crown fixed at the area. Dentist will not treat a patient under that circumstance with a regular cavity filling. If that is not the case however, filling material will be used finished off with a sealant.

The dentist drills and cleans until decayed enamel and core matter, pulp etc, is removed, then cleaned and treated, filled to it's capacity with an amalgam that will fill the space. i think most of the doctors first prefer for filling.

Every tooth that is filled is essentially "cored out". The dentist drills and cleans until decayed enamel and core matter, pulp etc, is removed. The interior is then cleaned and treated, filled to it's capacity with an amalgam that will fill the space. So, a "cored-out" tooth is the natural process of filling a cavity, or it would be pulled.

A substance called amalgam is packed into the tooth. This substance used to have mercury in it, but not any more. Now filling material is white so it blends in with the tooth. After the substance is packed in, it may require hardening. After that, the surface is smoothed.
