Talk about a touchy subject, and an emotional topic. As with most difficult conversations it is better to start early and to be honest with your prospective spouse. You could suggest that it is for the protection of you both. Make sure she/he would receive something from the pre-nuptial.

Not everyone is happy with this. But I would have a plan on what the -pre nuptial will be and read it over before you offer it.
