Measure your chimney's width. Choose either a treated or untreated 2"x6" board about 8" shorter than your chimney's width. Apply braces to chimney and board.

First measure the chimney width and find what style of mantle you want to build the mantle. After you do this, find out what kind of wood you'll prefer to use. Get treated or untreated 2"x6" board about 8", shorter than the chimneys width. Then put braces on chimney and board.

You're going to need morter, bricks, a general idea of what you're looking for, and a steady idea of concrete mixing. You'll need draw up a general schematic and design of what you want, open the windows before you build a mantle, as concrete mix and laquor can be dangerous if inhaled.

A mantle must have a secure foundation to the wall. A 2x4 needs to be securely mounted on the wall first, so that the mantle can be mounted on it.

Screw two decorative brackets to chimney. Drill holes for the screws into the brick with a masonry bit, then insert anchors into each. Lay a nicely finised board on top.
