How do you fix a generator that starts but them immediately quits running?

I have an Onan 4000 Watt Generator.

It sounds like you have a fuel delivery problem. I am assuming that the generator is gas so there may be a stuck float in the carburator, the choke is stuck, or a needle is clogged.

Sounds like you have a mechanical problem with the generator motor. I would flush the fuel out, change the oil, and see if that makes a difference. If it persists have a mechanic look at it.

As first step, flush the fuel out then change the oil; if it persists then replace the fuel pump. I think this will solve the problem.

The first thing to check would be the oil level as most generators will cut off in the way that you have described to prevent engine damage when low.

Check if the slip rings and the bushes are fine since they control the power connection to the rotor and there could be a break.

in this kind of generator there will be an inverter which will automatically switch the control from electrical connection as to work in Generator when power failure occurs. in this kind of generator fuel and oil are used. A sensor is fit in the generator which will automatically switch on the generator when power failure occurs.

If this seems to happening to your generator you will need to replace the fuel pump. Once the fuel pump is replaced then the generator should not shut off anymore.
