While the symptoms of both diseases can be similar, there are blood tests that show specific antigens in each disease. The patient will be interviewed too as to recent travel, insect bites, etc. , which helps narrow the options as well. RMSF is often accompanied by a tell-tale rash, though not in all cases.

Serology. A blood test where the lab will look for specific antibodies in your blood that are produced in response to the rickettsia or spirochaete in question. The test(s) have to be ordered by a doctor and they will only do so if you are likely to have been bitten by a tick and are showing symptoms.

If you suspect you have either of these diseases after a tick bite, you must visit your doctor for confirmation and treatment.
