True depression is when you can't even drag yourself out of the bed. You truly feel as if nothing matters or has meaning. Everyone has bouts of feeling 'blue' which is common around difficult times such as death, etc..but having prolonged feelings of sadness or melancholy are cause for concern.

When you are depressed, nothing seems to make you happy. You have no energy, even for things that you normally enjoy or are necessary for daily functions. You may close yourself off from friends and loved ones.
