There are 2 bolts that run up from the nose of the Marine Starter. These are 9/16 bolts. There will be two more bolts - 3/8 bolts on other end of the nose. You will need to remove all these bolts to get access to the starter and remove it.

If you have a bracket on the front side - don't forget to remove it or else your starter will not come out!  add a comment

Look in your owner's manual. The starter is easy to replace. Just unplug the transistor wires, unscrew the unit, put in the new unit and rewire. You'll get greasy but its easy to do.

Which GM starter do you have? Is it the standard HD marine starter that was manufactured earlier or the gear reduction starter which is newer? The first type has a motor that is much larger than the solenoid.

I'll add a few more differences. The HD marine starter is covered and is seen in Mercruiser, OMC, Crusader, Volvo and many other marine engines. Do you know which engine you have? Removing the 2 types is slightly different.  add a comment

Remove the motor cover and disconnect the battery cables. The procedure varies with manufacturer, but typically you must remove four bolts that hold the starter in place.

First, take out the retaining bolt, you can find that on the soleniod. Pull off the rear casing and rear cover, as it will give you better access. Remove the pins that are holding the springs in place. Make sure that the brushes don't fall out when you took teh springs out, or it won't go back in.

To remove the marine starter remove the panel of the vehicle and unscrew the nuts in the marine starter. See weather any wire is left out ot not. Or else contact your service people to help you in this issue. So that they will be able to solve the problem in the starter.
