How do you replace a gear cable?

Check out your cable first, make sure it's broken. You need a small screwdriver, a 5mm allen key, some cable cutters and some grease. Remove the cable gear and oil the gears before slipping the new cable onto the gears.

There is a little hook and peg connector on each end of the cable, one to the deraileur mechanism and one to the gear-change mechanism on the handlebar. The simple answer is to loosen one of those, then the cable will pop right out/in.
