How do you shorten a jacket that has a lining in the sleeve?

I need to shorten the length of my jacket sleeves for my son, it fits perfectly every where else.

This can be a bit tricky. You need to undo the stitching that connects the lining to the sleeve at the wrist, revealing the hem in the jacket. Hem up the jacket, and then trim the lining. Re-sew the lining back over the sleeve hem by hand.

If there is a cuff and you want to keep that part you can use a seam ripper to remove it, then cut the sleve to the right lengh and then hide the cut end in the cuff. If there is no cuff you can cut the sleefe to about 2inc longer and hem it.

Rather than unsewing at the sleeve, consider the shoulder instead. You'll need to think of the jacket as like two seperate pieces (lining and shell) and shorten both seperately, then bring it back together. LOTS of work! Better to take it to taylor if you aren't a very good seamstress.

To shorten the jacket you will want some seam allowance. Measure the length of the sleeves and make a mark one inch away from your desired length. Cut on the one inch spot and tuck the material around, pin into place to hold and sew a stitch inside the sleeve.

Take out the hem in the lining. Take out the hem in the sleeve. Mark where you want the sleeve to end and baste it in place. Let the lining hang down and then turni it up the same amount (1/2" to 1") as it was originally. Stitch the lining to the turned up jacket sleeve. Press carefully. Good Luck!

To shorten the sleeves on a lined jacket, turn the sleeve inside out, and see how it is put together. Undo the stitching, remove the desired amount of fabric, and put it back together as it was. Do one sleeve at a time, so you can use the other as a guide.

The easiest way is to simply turn the jacket inside out and hem the sleeve at the base of the sleeve hem, by hand, with a hem stich. Be carfull not to have your stiches show through too much. This way you don't have to deal with the lining.

Turn sleeve inside out and remove stitching connecting lining to the sleeve at the sleeve bottom, mark the desired length. Trim both lining and sleeve, leaving 5/8 inch more length than needed, turn sleeve fabric to inside with lining turned to inside, stitch by hand with overcast stitch, being sure stitches are barely visible on right side of jacket sleeve.
