Start by getting a good plumbing guide from your local home center. Check the tools list and compare with what you already have. Purchase what you can afford/need for your particular job. If you have questions, head to a good local hardware store and find the plumbing expert for advice.

Many problems can be solved with a little know how or a how-to plumbing book. Some tools that are essential for minor problems would be an auger or plumbing snake to clean out lines, a plunger and/or drain cleaner for clogs, and some hand tools as screwdrivers and wrenches.

Go to your local bookstore, look under home repairs. Choose a book you feel comfortable using. It will give step-by-step instructions for almost every problem you will have with plumbing.

Clogged drains can usually be managed with a plunger or liquid or gel clog removers. Minor leaks can typically be fixed by replacing pipe where easily accessible.

Clogs: get a plunger and a snake. Also you might want a pipe wrench and teflon tape so you can take apart the pipes under a clogged sink. Leaking faucets--it's pretty easy to buy a new faucet and install it yourself, following directions.

Call professional plumber. Know the house plans. Check existing plumbing whether it is as per plans. Check the existing plumbing conditions like condition of pipe etc. Change the pipes, valves, taps, mixers if required. Confirm zero leakage from all the connections. For this use quality material. Use carefully all the taps / valves.

What you need to do is make sure you have the right tools and the right size plumbing equipment, and to not be afraid to ask for help.
