It depends on what age level you are teaching. In the lower primary grades, children generally learn about communities and what it means to be a citizen. In upper elementary grades (4th grade on) there is generally a set curriculum focus (state history, U.S. History, cultures, etc.). I like to use interactive lessons to get students engaged in social studies.

I would suggest using lots of bright pictures which will grab their attention and exciting words that they understand and have them participate.

The best way to teach them is by first getting their attention. The best way is to relate all class material to something that the children are familiar to.

The key is to keep it interesting. Just reading straight out of a dull textbook might not keep student attention. Activities like coloring maps, doing skits, showing videos, and so forth can help keep the material engaging for students. Textbook learning should be accompanied by something more interactive if you want the material absorbed.
