The differential makes the power from the engine go to the wheels. It splits the engine torque in two ways allowing each output to spin at different speeds.

Your drive line turns your pinion which turns the ring gear. The number of teeth determines your ratio. (10pinionteeth : 41ringteeth = 4.10 gears) ring turns carrier which turns axles

It is a set of gears that splits power to the wheels. Most car have an "open" differential where power is equally split to each wheel. One wheel can rotate a lot slower to allow for easier, tighter turning. A limited slip differential allows for less slip keeping power going to each wheel regardless of traction conditions.

This transmits power allowing the wheels to rotate at different speeds. It splits the engine torque two ways allowing the output to spin at a differnt speed.
