The heater system in the car mainly involves a heater core and a blower. Hot coolant flows from the engine through the heater core as the car runs. When the heat is turned on, a door opens and the air is directed through the core by a blower motor.

In watercooled cars, the engines coolant runs through a heater core which in turn produces heat that is moved through the vehicle cabin. In an air cooled car, the heat of the exhaust is used to heat air that is then moved through the vehicle's cabin.

The heater in vehicles is a very simple design. There is a separate small radiator located in the firewall of the vehicle that the coolant flows through. When you turn on the heater it blows air through this radiator and carries the heat into the cabin. This is why the heater doesn't work until the car is warm.
