Yes, this condition can give you nail ridges and can cause your nails to become very brittle. The reason for this is with hypothyroidism all of the systems in your body slow down quite a bit. This causes you to sweat less often so your nails don't get the moisture that they need to remain healthy.

Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, can often cause thin or brittle nails. The nails may also break easily. Occasionally, the nails may separate from the nail bed. More rarely, a thickening of the nails may occur. The effects of hypothyroidism on the nails will fade with the start of thyroid replacement therapy.

Hypothyroid is a deficiency in the thyroid hormones. This condition will cause dry brittle nails and dry cuticles. Similar to hair growth, hypothyroid may slow down the growth of nails. This combined with the easy breakage of dry brittle nails will often make it very hard to maintain nails of any length.

Hypothyroid symptoms usually appear slowly over months and years. Symptoms can include coarse, thinning hair, dry skin, brittle nails, yellowish tint to skin, slow body movements, cold skin, cold intolerance, feeling tired and sluggish, depression, constipation and heavy or irregular menstrual periods(lasting 7-10 days). Treatment is usually a supplement that needs to be taken daily.
