People has been around since March 4, 1974, so if you were born around that time or later, the magazine has in fact been gracing grocery store checkout lines for your entire life.

People Magazine started off as "People" page in Time Magazine. On March 4 1974, the magazine itself hit the newsstands with actress Mia Farrow on its cover. At that time the cover was the only thing in color, while the rest of the magazine was printed in black and white.

This magazine was co-founded by Dick Durrell and Matthew Maynard and debuted in 1974. The March 4th issue featured actress Mia Farrow and was printed solely in black-and-white except for its cover. So that makes this magazine a grand total of 36 years young.
