Question by  Ann53 (92)

How much does it cost to replace the seal in a transmission?

I've got three estimates and they are worlds apart.

It depends on the kind of transmission in many cases. Depending on front/rear seal and the type of transmission - you could be looking at $200 to $600, with 600 being for the front seal which is harder to replace. The part are not all that expensive, it is the labor that jacks the price tag up.

The seals are very cheap, you can go to Auto Zone and pick them up for under $5. Getting to the seals is the hard part. It takes over 2 hours of labor just to access the seals, and the dealer is going to charge you probably $100 per hour. You're better off finding an independent mechanic.

This depends on the type of transmission you want to replace. You could be looking at $300 to $700 if it's a front or rear seal.

It depends on if it is the rear seal or front seal. If it is the rear you are looking at about $200.00 with parts and labor. If it is the front seal you are looking at around $600.00 with the parts and labor. I hope this helps you out.

if it is the rear main on a rear or all wheel drive car or truck u are looking at about 200-400 plus labor rate of 50-75 per hour .this about a two hour job.so ur looking at about 600 big ones.its easy i would do it for 100.

Well without knowing more about the car like the make. model, transmission, and year I can't accurately tell you. I would also need to know exactly which of the transmission seals you need replaced. If you got quoted very different prices then chances are they weren't talking about the same thing. Make sure they know exactly what you need replaced.

Mine is a 2008 Ford Escape with 97000 miles on it. It runs great but it has developed a trans fluid leak. Can anyone give me a "ball park figure" on what the cost is to replace the seals?
