Sous chefs start off from about $30,000 a year. Pastry chefs are specialized and tend to start off around $40,000. Head chefs can make about $70-80,000. It depends on where you live and the location and popularity of the restaurant. Being a chef would involve 2-3 years of training at a culinary school or program and some apprenticeship following that.

There is a wide range to the salaries that chefs make. Going to culinary school is quite expensive. Once you graduate and become a chef the pay is pretty good. But it will take you years and lots of hard work to become a very highly paid chef. Most chefs never reach that level.
